Audition Information

Next Auditions: September, 2011

Details:

The BluesTones hold auditions in the Fall and Spring of every year about 2 or 3 weeks into the semester. We get together with the rest of the JMU A Cappella community and hold try-outs, searching for the best and the brightest voices JMU has to offer. There are two parts to the audition process: the initial audition and call backs.

It can seem a bit intimidating - imagine 300 hopefuls showing up at the same time, trying to sign up for an audition time. No worries though; we make sure we hear everyone. The auditions are open; after an initial meeting which orients you with the audition process, you sign up with the groups for which you would like to audition. As you go through the audition process, you'll get a feel which group fits you best, and the groups get a feel for who they would like to call back.

For your audition:

Please prepare a verse and chorus of a song that shows off your voice. While song choice is completely up to you, we ask that you don't sing Broadway or Classical music. While these are valid forms of music, we want to hear music similar to what we sing to see how your voice would fit with our group. FYI: Top 40, Pop, Rock, Hip-Hop, Country, Soul, Alternative, and Bluegrass are all great choices. When it comes time to make your decision, pick a song that you love to sing!

The audition may also consist of:

1. Range Testing - We might have you sing a scale to the top and/or bottom of your range. If you have no idea what part you sing, that's totally fine; this gives us a better picture of what voice part you might sing.

2. Pitch Matching - We might play you a series of notes and have you sing them back for us.

3. Rhythm Reading - Syncopation. Our music has a lot of it and it helps to have a little rhythm. It's much like sight singing - we're just curious if you have had it or not. Yes? ...awesome. No? ...no problem.

Good luck and we hope to see you out there!
